How to set up Google Authorship to supercharge your website

In what originally appeared as another failed project, Google+ has bucked the trend and started to grow at a breakneck pace. In fact Google+ recently beat Twitter to become the world’s 2nd largest social network.

One of the keys to Google+ success has been the goal to give content creators a way to integrate their blogs with the social network in new and functional ways.   While Facebook’s OpenGraph allows for some cool integrations, it doesn’t really match up with Google’s toolset.

Google Authorship is one of those key features. This allows your G+ profile to show up in Google search results beside your articles.

Not only does it give you bragging rights to show your non-technical friends your picture on Google’s search, but with the recent Panda 2.0 update it appears that having a G+ linked site will increase your rankings.

Before you begin you will need to make sure your G+ profile is ready for Authorship.   You MUST have a clear picture of your face as your profile picture.  You will also need a email address from the domain you are setting Authorship up on.

To set up your website to link with your G+ profile, just follow these steps:

  1. Sign-up for Google Authorship (you will need an email address from the domain you are linking.  For example:  [email protected] would allow you to link to WebTalk Revolution.
  2. Next go to your G+ profile.  Under the “About” section you will see an area called “Links”.  Click “Edit” and add a new link to your website under the “Contributor” setting.
  3. After this you will need to link your profile on your blog to your Google+ page.  Wordpress users can use a plugin to enable this functionality.

And there you have it!  To make sure you have enabled everything properly, check out this tool.   Just copy and paste a link to one of your articles and Google will let you know if everything is working properly.
